Touristic importance and culture of Shillong
Cherrapunji is a small town in Meghalaya. Cherrapunji held the record of highest rainfall receiving place in the world. However, nearby Mawsynram has more rainfall nowadays. Cherrapunji is at a distance of 56 kilo meters from the capital of Meghalaya, Shillong. While entering Shillong, tourists can see the Umiyam Lake. ‘Umiyam’ means tears. This is also called Barrahpani. This lake is a good picnic spot. Skiing, boating etc facilities are available here. A park and the Meghalaya Government Archid resorts are also situated here. Shillong is not only the capital of Meghalaya, but also a wonderful hill station.
Shillong is situated at a height of 4,908 feet from the sea level. Khasi, Jaintia, Garo tribes reside in Meghalaya. These are very soft and hard working people. These tribes follow the matrilineal culture. Mother is the head of the family. Youngest daughter of the family inherits the property and the responsibility of looking after the parents also lies with her.
