Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji is at a distance of 56 kms from Shillong.   It takes 2 hours to reach Cherrapunji in the narrow roads and high mountains.  Visitors who enter Cherrapunji expect to see dense forests.  But, would be shocked to find dry grass lands, children and women carrying pots of water etc.  The hills are full of coal and limestone mines.

Cherrapunji has an average elevation of 4,283 feet and is a plateau in the southern part of Khasi hills.  The original name is Sohra Punj. Soh means fruits and rah means available.  This was the main business center for British.  Coal, lime stone and sand stone production center.  They could not pronounce the name correctly and used to call this place Cherrapunji which gradually became Cherrapunji.  Locals call this place Sohra.  Many of the uneducated does not even know that their place is called Cherrapunji by others.

Cherrapunji

Heavy rains wash out the top soil on the plateau and now Cherrapunji remained as a market place.  People of nearby villages come and sell their things here.  This market is held for every 8 days.  Government offices and hospitals work compulsorily on that day.  Taxis and Buses are also over crowded on the market day.
Though rainfall has decreased there are many places to be visited in Cherrapunji.  Nahkalikai waterfall is the 4th highest waterfall in the world. Honey, pepper, betel nuts and cinnamon are cheaper here.  Nohsngithiang waterfalls which are also called Seven sisters falls are another attraction.  This is at a height of 4,500 feet and Bangladesh is clearly visible from this height.  Mawsmai caves are located nearby.

Presently main attractions are Cherrapunji are the waterfalls and the limestone caves.  Mawsmai is one such cave. The ceiling of this cave is 30 – 40 feet at some places.  Water trickles from the ceiling.   These caves are very dark. Trekking and adventure caving facilities are available for those who are interested.

Cherrapunji is famous for root bridges.  These are formed with the roots of big trees.  These bridges can bear the weight of 50 people.  October – April is the best place to visit Cherrapunji.

Handi valley is another must visit tourist spot. The valley is a hundreds of feet depth with the hills on either sides.  A fencing is laid with iron bars.    30 -40 view points provide beautiful view of the nature in the surrounding of Pachmarhi.  Chess fall, big fall, little fall water falls are famous.  This water falls fall from a height of 100 – 125 meters.

The best time to visit Pachmarhi is between October and June when the weather is convenient. To visit all the places of Pachmarhi a stay of at least one week is required.

Amarkantak

This is the birth place of Narmada devi.  This is a holy place for Hindus.  This place is in the midst of dense forests and mountains.  To reach this place one has to cross a forest named ‘Achankar Marg’Kapil Dhara and Doodh Dhara waterfalls are situated here.  The atmosphere here is very pleasant.  Facilities are provided for trekking.

Khandala is situated at a distance of 101kms from Mumbai. Khandala is full of natural beauty with lush greenery and high mountains.  This is in the Sahyadri mountain range in Maharashtra towards the west direction.  This is at an altitude of 625mtrs.  Tourists want to visit this place again and again because of its captivating landscapes.  Khandala is being recognized as a wonderful and beautiful hill station even though it is small.  One cannot see anything else but greenery from this place.  Adventurous people love to go for trekking here.

Just 5kms from Khandala, there is another tourist spot Lonavala.  This is bigger than Khandala.  Tourist should compulsorily visit this place.  Khandala and Lonavala compete with each other in beauty.  There are many lakes around Khandala.  These also attract the tourists.  Deep valleys on one side, high mountains on other side give a special feeling to the tourists. Atmosphere here is cool till May.  There are many historical forts, waterfalls and lakes on the route of Mumbai – Khandala.

Rajmachipark: While going to Lonavala from Mumbai, one can see a beautiful garden and Rajmachi fort.  There is a big valley also here.  A restaurant and a temple are also situated here.  A park is also situated for children.

Kune waterfalls: Water falls from a height of 100 feet.  These waterfalls are situated in the middle of Khandala and Lonavala.  Tourists take bath under these waterfalls.  Karla, Bhaja caves which belong to 2 B.C are also located nearby.  Many interesting places like Tiger’s Leap, Monkey hill, Lohagad, Shivaji Park and Duke’s nose can be visited.  Khandala is well connected with rail and roadways.

Journey from Kozhikode(Calicut) to Wayanad

The Kozhikode and the Wayanad are besides each other. The time of journey is two hours and it is the area completely where the tribal people live. The Wayanad hill station is around 7000 feet high. As we reach the hill the coconut trees that are grown on the hills make us feel as if they are taken by hand as if they are so near to our hands. The hill is full of greenery and there are number of shades in the greenery which looks very beautiful. There are a variety of trees like mango, coconut, poka, coffee, tea, elachi, pepper, cloves and so on the hill. The Western Ghats look more beautiful than the Eastern Ghats.
