According to the puranaas, Lord Shiva has appeared as self-existent being or Swamyambhuwu at 12 places in India.  The Shivalingas at these 12 places are called Dwadasa Jyothirlingams.  Hindu devotees have an ambition of going for pilgrimage to all these jyothirlingams in their lives at least for once. They are –

  • Somnath or Someswar – Somnath near Veraval in Gujarath
  • Mallikarjunudu – Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh
  • Kedareshwar – Kedarnath in Himalayas
  • Viswanath – Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh
  • Trimbakeshwar – Trimbakeshwaram near Nasik in Maharashtra
  • Ghrishneshwar – Near Ellora caves in Maharashtra
  • Rameshwar – Rameshwarama in Tamil Nadu
  • Mahakaaleshwar – Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh
  • Omkareshwar of Amareshwar – Mortakka on the banks of River Narmada in Madhya Pradesh
  • Bhimshankar – Neral between Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra/ On the hills of Brahmapur near Guwahati in Assam
  • Vaidyanath –Parli Vaidyanath in the north of Hyderabad/Chittabhumi in the Santhal Paragana in Bihar
  • Nageshwar – Near Dwaraka in Gujarat/Avadhgram in Maharashtra

Regarding the last three places, people of these villages claim that the lingam at their village is the actual jyothirlingam.  Even scholars are not sure about the actual locations of jyothirlingas in India.
