Mountaineering

Many foreign tourists come to Leh to climb the mountain Nanukun, which is in the Himalayan mountain range.  Availability of transport facility is one of the main reasons for the tourists to visit this place.  Para Gliding facility is also arranged for the adventurous tourists. July and August months are suitable for swimming and rafting in the rivers Indus, Zanskar and Shyok (in Nubra valley).  Camel riding is available at Nubra region.   This place is suitable for trekking as the surroundings are pleasant.

River Indus

It is not an exaggeration to say that there are no words to describe the beauty of river Indus.  This river originates in Tibet and flows through Kashmir, Pakistan and discharges into the Arabian ocean.  A festival with the name ‘Sindu Darshan’ is organized by the government of India every year in May and June months.  The journey of this river starts from the holy Manasarovar in Tibet.  So devotees consider this river a sacred one.  Many devotees throng to this place during the festival.  Devotees from various parts of India bring water from their nearest rivers and mix the water in Indus during the festival .

Drass is another place of interest which is at a distance of 60kms from Leh.  This is the second most coldest place on earth. Winter snow fall can be enjoyed here.  In winter – 40o temperature is also recorded here.  Kargil,  Phugtal,  Rangdum, Sani and Suru valley are the other interesting places.

Govind Wildlilfe Sanctuary is in the beautiful and fascinating surroundings of Uttarakhand district.  This was established in 1955.  This is spread over an area of 953 square kilometers.   This sanctuary attracts the tourists with high mountains and many rare species like Himalayan bears.  Nanda devi and Rajaji National Parks and Kedarnath wildlife sanctuary are other places of tourist interest.  Facilities for climbing and trekking are provided.  Many animals and plants can be seen in these forests.

Rail and road facilities are available to reach Garhwal.  If tourists take a train they have to get down at Rishikesh and travel 170kms to Garhwal. Buses and cars can go up to Govindghat.

Pulicat lake
Pulicat Lake is one of the big lakes in Andhra Pradesh.  This is a salt water lake.  But the water is not very salty because three major rivers also feed the lagoon with their waters along with the sea water. Original name of this lake was Pralaya Kaveri.  Gradually it has become Pulicat.  Pulicat Lake is spread over 250km in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states.  The area increases to 460sq kilometers in rainy reason.  Sriharikota Island separates Pulicat Lake from Bay of Bengal.  On the southern banks of Pulicat Lake is the Pulicat town in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu.

Pulicat Lake is at a distance of 27kms from Pottisriramulu Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh.  This lake is the abode to many birds and beautiful nature.  ‘Periplus of Erythraean sea’ is a book written by an author in 1st century in which Pulicat Lake was referred as one of the three ports in eastern part of India. Pulicat was also mentioned in the list of ports prepared by Ptolomey in 2nd century. In the 13th century, some people were expelled from Mecca because they refused to pay the tax to newly elected Khalifa.  They travelled in four  boats and reached Pulicat.

Later in 1515 a church was built here by the people of Portugese ruins of which can be found even today.  History also tells that Dutch people also migrated to this place.

Khandala is situated at a distance of 101kms from Mumbai. Khandala is full of natural beauty with lush greenery and high mountains.  This is in the Sahyadri mountain range in Maharashtra towards the west direction.  This is at an altitude of 625mtrs.  Tourists want to visit this place again and again because of its captivating landscapes.  Khandala is being recognized as a wonderful and beautiful hill station even though it is small.  One cannot see anything else but greenery from this place.  Adventurous people love to go for trekking here.

Kune waterfalls: Water falls from a height of 100 feet.  These waterfalls are situated in the middle of Khandala and Lonavala.  Tourists take bath under these waterfalls.  Karla, Bhaja caves which belong to 2 B.C are also located nearby.  Many interesting places like Tiger’s Leap, Monkey hill, Lohagad, Shivaji Park and Duke’s nose can be visited.  Khandala is well connected with rail and roadways.

In Tekkadi many cottages are built in the forests. There is also a lake in the middle of the river.  Main attraction of Tekkadi is the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.  Visitors can get into the three storey boats in the lake and take a look around.  Nilgiri deers, monkeys etc are found here.  Tigers also can be seen sometimes.

Munnar is the place where three rivers Nallathanni, Kundala, Mudrapuzha meet.  ‘Munu’ in Malayalam means three ‘Aru’ means River.  Munnar in Kerala is the most famous tourist destination with Tata Tea estates and Mahindra resorts.

Visitors have to travels on a ghat road to reach Munnar.  ‘Lock Heart Gap’ is written on a board leading to Munnar.  The nature really locks the hearts of the visitors with high water falls, tea plantations and shiny white clouds.

Munnar is situated at a height of 1600 to 1800 mtrs above the sea level and is called the ‘Himalayas of South India’.  The height of ‘Anamudi’  peak is 2695mtrs.  ‘Mattupetty’ dam is also located here. The beauty of tea plantations from this dam cannot be described in words.  There are hundred thousands of tea plantations on these mountains in Western Ghats. Eucalyptus trees also give a treat to the eyes.  These trees seem like touching the skies.

Munnar has many beautiful lakes.  Echo point is one of them.  Tourists forget even to blink their eyes in the fear of missing the beauty around.  Top station is a small village located in the Kerala – Tamil Nadu border.  This village is famous for Neelakurinji flowers which bloom for every 12 years.

Eravikulam Park is situated at a distance of 17kms from Munnar.  It houses Nilagiri deers, Sambars, and Langur monkeys.  This park is also famous for rare flower species.

Kaladi, the birth place of Sankaracharya is in Cochin.  The building has the idols of Lord Subrahmanya, Vighneswara and Parvathi.

Dutch palace in Cochin houses many paintings are rare articles of King Kerala Verma and Ram verma.  Catching fishes by Chinese fishing nets is very interesting.
