Highest mountain ranges, covered with white blanket of snow, vast green Nature, beautiful blue rivers, lakes and deep valleys. Leh is in between them.  This beautiful town is a heavenly abode for the foreign tourists.  It is a great destination for home tourists also.  This village attracts the customers with its beauty.

Leh is at an altitude of 11,500 kms , and is located in Jammu & Kashmir near the Indian border. This is a district head quarter.  Not only that, this is the largest district in India.  Half of the area of Jammu & Kashmir is in this district.  When British ruled India, they were very much interested in visiting Leh.  Nearly 18,000 national and international tourists visit Leh annually.  Tourists are also attracted to the Buddhist culture.

The Buddhist memorials in Leh are a treat to the eyes.  Many tourists visit the Shanti Stupa which is outside the town.  In the middle of the town there is a Kali mandir which is 800 years old, on a hill which mesmerizes the tourists.  Tourists can also visit Leh palace belonging to 17th century and is built in the Tibetan architecture tradition.  Most valuable and most ancient of all the places, is the Hemis gompa monastery.

Mountaineering

Many foreign tourists come to Leh to climb the mountain Nanukun, which is in the Himalayan mountain range.  Availability of transport facility is one of the main reasons for the tourists to visit this place.  Para Gliding facility is also arranged for the adventurous tourists. July and August months are suitable for swimming and rafting in the rivers Indus, Zanskar and Shyok (in Nubra valley).  Camel riding is available at Nubra region.   This place is suitable for trekking as the surroundings are pleasant.

River Indus

It is not an exaggeration to say that there are no words to describe the beauty of river Indus.  This river originates in Tibet and flows through Kashmir, Pakistan and discharges into the Arabian ocean.  A festival with the name ‘Sindu Darshan’ is organized by the government of India every year in May and June months.  The journey of this river starts from the holy Manasarovar in Tibet.  So devotees consider this river a sacred one.  Many devotees throng to this place during the festival.  Devotees from various parts of India bring water from their nearest rivers and mix the water in Indus during the festival .

Drass is another place of interest which is at a distance of 60kms from Leh.  This is the second most coldest place on earth. Winter snow fall can be enjoyed here.  In winter – 40o temperature is also recorded here.  Kargil,  Phugtal,  Rangdum, Sani and Suru valley are the other interesting places.

Chandigarh is an excellent newly designed city. In this city the main place to be visited is Nackchand Rock Gardens. The other places which are looks very attractive for tourists are the construction of University Building and Secretariat Building. From the distance of 20 Km from Chandigarh there is a beautiful garden which is in the form of steps in the mountain ranges like view at a place called Pinjore / Pinjaur which is a one of the tourist place to be visited by everyone. There is a temple called Goddess Manasa Devi which is at the outside of the city. In the same way there is a place called Kalka which as temple of Goddess Kalika which starts at the way from Chandigarh to Simla. Among the Nine temples which are treated as Nava Durgas by the people of that area the Manasa Devi and Kalka Devi temples are two of them.

‘Man mandir Palace’ is another building built by Raja Mansingh Tomer.  This palace has a big vicinity, rooms and windows which enable the queens to watch the cultural programs conducted in the palace.  There are pipes to supply water to some of the rooms.  These are the then air coolers.  Narrow pipes are arranged to talk to people in different storey.  These are telephones.  There are 8 hooks to the roof of a hall. Golden cradles were arranged to these hooks for the queens.  There is also a swimming pool.  Queens who heard the news of death of their husband used to do ‘Sahagamanam’ (Throwing oneself in to the fire) in this pool after removing all the water.

Chowmahalla palace, the 270 year old historical monument near Charminar has proved its architectural brilliance once again to the world by bagging the ‘UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit Award’. This palace was built in the Persian style of construction in the year 1750 by Salabath Jung.  Asafjahi rulers used this building as the political consultations.  The palace had an open area of 60 acres but now only 12 acres remain.  The palace is a replica of Sha Iran Bungalow in Tehran.  This palace actually is a group of buildings.  Aftab Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal, Afzal Mahal, Mehtab Mahal, Roshan bungalow and Khilawat are some of the important buildings.  A marble throne used by the Nizam rulers can be seen in the palace.  This palace was in use till 1948.  In 2005, this palace was open for the visitors. In 2000 Princess Asra, wife of   Prince Mukarram Jah Bahadur started renovation works of the palace.  The renovation work was successfully done by Rahul Malhotra Association. They brought back the past glory to the palace.

Barrister Senior Counsel of Prince Mukarrm Jah said that steps have been taken to convert Chowmahalla palace in to a museum which will house various things belonging to the Nizams.  The artifacts of the Purani Haveli Nizam Museum will also be displayed here.  The Shiya Aalam the rare religious relics housed in one portion of the palace will also be opened for the public.
